The Brainfaze is the O.G. in the Faze lineup. Originally built as an all-rounder shortboard back in 2016, but once I got it under the feet of Hamish Renwick (local Tassie surfer — check the clip below), we knew there was something more to explore with this board.
A few variations later, we had dialled in the Brainfaze just before the Sydney Surf Pro, where Jadson Andre rode it in a Surfer/Shaper showdown at Manly Beach, thanks to Vissla. Jaddy gave it the nod of approval, and so the Brainfaze was officially born.
Since then, the board has evolved ever so slightly from the original design — it was the bottom contours of that board which gave it a crazy amount of spark, from holding turns for longer, to experiencing a hit of speed coming off the bottom, to having confidence when committing to a big section turn. The board can handle it all.
So let's break it down: it starts with some vee in the nose, expanding into a single concave under your front foot, before a reasonable double concave just before the fins. It flattens off through the fins and exits off the tail with a little vee again.
The rocker is fairly subtle, nothing too hectic, but I've added a little extra flick off the tail that begins about halfway down the center fin to help with going rail to rail, or getting on the back foot when locking into some steep east coast funnels.
We tested the board with a few different tail designs and fin setups, but the one that worked best was the round-tail with a thruster fin setup.

The Karma Kartel is the culmination of two boards from the past and a good hard look into the future. The outline and rocker comes from a performance twin fin called Modis. Over the last 4 years I have been experimenting with multiple bottom contours and improving each outcome, 1 board at a time.
When it comes to creating specific bottom contours, the end goal was simply to try and generate speed through least resistance but attempting to channel the water flow to the fins before disengaging off the board via the bottom edge. My theory was channeling the energy created from the bottom contours to the fins, where it would be accelerated over the fins foil, giving the rider a boost of speed and performance.
The fins for the Karma Kartel was the missing ingredient and while we all have our favorite set, I settled on the Scorpion Twin from Wild Things. The Scorpion has just the right amount of drive and hold being somewhere in-between an upright (performance) Twin and raked back keel fin. It's this combination that convinced me they should be sold together! Trailer fins can also be adopted into this design.
The Karma Kartel also includes a unique stepped down rocker line. I have coined this design the Speed Tail (because it reminded me of the McLaren Speedtail’s rear shape). Again, water flowing under the board towards the tail accelerates. The round tail, features a sharp vee off the tail as this acts as a 3rd fin for extra hold but I am experimenting with different tail designs including a snub round tail and the Swallow Tail.
Best performing in good quality waves in the head high and above but of course, given its beak style nose and forward volume aspects, the Karma Kartel can be ridden in just about every condition. Go small and wide for a groveler!
